Math 397: Structured ResearchThis course serves as a way of involving students in scholarly projects. The opportunity for students to pursue topics of interest to them is a tremendously valuable and meaningful experience. This semester I have the following students working with me: Nathan Atkinson: Fundamentals of Wavelets. Wavelets are functions used in processing and compression of signals, and are particularly useful in image compression and transmission. A lot of cool things are being done with wavelets, like the FBI standard for encoding fingerprint data. Thela Morales: Fractals. Fractals are shapes that have a self similar property, patterns that repeat themselves at all levels. For example, coastline and mountain ranges can be fractal-like. If you zoom in on a coastline segment, you will see bays connected together along the jagged coastline. If you in turn zoom in on the bay, you will see smaller bays connected by smaller jagged coastline segments.
