About

Find Out More About the Product

The client, Integration Industries, has asked to design and build a “Graffiti Bot.” The Graffiti Bot must be capable of plotting on a horizontal surface with a working area of 2.5’ x 2.5’. If possible, the client would like the graffiti bot to be able to plot on vertical surfaces in addition to horizontal surfaces.

Statement of Work

  • Purpose

The client, Integration Industries, requested a device that can plot a predesigned drawing automatically on a horizontal surface and predetermined medium.

  • Scope of Work

The graffiti bot will need: a frame, a mount for the chosen medium, a program to control how an image will be plotted, a multi axis system that will plot an image in the designated work area.

  • Location of Work

The majority of the work will be done in or around room 105 of Confluence Hall.

  • Period of Performance

The project began on August 30, 2022 and will be finished by December 15, 2022

  • Deliverables Schedule

See project schedule in useful links

  • Acceptance Criteria

The bot will be capable of plotting on a horizontal surface with a work area of at least 2.5’ x 2.5’. In addition, the bot will be easily movable and to set up/

Team

Our Hardworking Team

Our team, Ink Masters, are working together to design and create a graffiti bot under certain circumstances which can be found through our site. As upperclassmen in the Mechanical Engineering - Technology program at Colorado Mesa University we are fulfilling these tasks by combining all of our skills and knowledge we have learned thus far. The most prominent skills to complete our design process will include computer programming, computer-aided design (CAD), machining and product development processes.

Customer Requirements

As a team, each member decided how important the customer requirements were on a 0 to 100 point scale. These are the average points distributions.

2.5 ft. x 2.5 ft. Work Area 20%
Horizontal Plotting 20%
Plotting Accuracy 15%
Surface Variety 15%
Stability 10%
Vertical Plotting 10%
Lightweight (under 25 lbs) 5%
Cost (under $150) 5%

Engineering Specifications

Using similar decision matrices as the customer requirements, we ranked the importance of the following engineering specifications. These are the average points distributions.

Capable of drawing on desired 2.5 ft x2.5 ft. plotting grid 30%
Demonstrate repeatability and accuracy on drawings 25%
Durable marking tip while plotting 20%
Resist deflection while graffiti bot is running 15%
Graffiti bot system weighs under 25 lbs. 10%

Check our Designs

Our techniques included all design ideas by including conditional and promising design ideas. From reverse engineering 3D printers and CNC designs, our team used a matrices method to decide what we thought were most important based on the frame, drawing medium, linear motion constraints, and motor drive.

Concept Evaluation

Promising Concepts

After using a matrices method, the following concepts have been evaluated as most promising

  • Focusing on total weight, durability, cost and workablity/repairs for our engineering analysis, wood was noticed to be the most promising while PVC piping and aluminum rods were also hopeful.

  • Focusing on surface variety, cost, ease of setup/replaceability, lifespan and cleanliness for our engineering analysis, a marker was noticed to be the most promising while an airbrush and crayon were also considerable.

  • Focusing on cost, setup, precision, ease of movement and simplicity for our engineering analysis, linear shaft rods were noticed to be the most promising while slide bearing carriages were also hopeful.

  • Focusing on cost, setup, precision, speed, weight and reliability for our engineering analysis, a GT2 belt/pulley was noticed to be the most promising while lead screws and a round belt/pulley were also reassuring.
