CONNECTING YOUR PC TO THE INTERNET THROUGH MESA STATE'S PPP SERVER:
INFORMATION FOR WINDOWS 3.1 COMPUTERS
Install Netscape Navigator
- Start Windows 3.1 and insert disk 1 of the Netscape Navigator Personal Edition software into your floppy drive.
- Click on File in the menu bar at the top of the Program Manager window, then select Run from the drop-down menu.
- In the Run dialog box, type in a:\setup (Note: If your 3 ½" floppy drive is called ‘b,’ then type in b:\setup). Then click on the OK button.
- Click on the Next button when each of the following dialog boxes appears: the Welcome screen, the Setup Type screen, and the Choose Destination Location screen.
- When instructed to do so, insert disk 2 in your floppy drive, then click on the OK button. Do the same with disks 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 when the Install Wizard asks for them.
- After all seven floppy disks have been copied to your hard disk drive, the Install Wizard will pause to ask if you want to restart Windows. Remove disk 7 from your floppy drive, then click on the Finish button.
Configure the automatic dialer to connect to Mesa State’s PPP server
- After Windows has come up on the screen again, a Netscape Personal Edition program group should appear in the Program Manager window. Double-click on the Account Setup Wizard icon.
- Click the Next button in the first screen that is displayed. In the next screen, click on "I already have a service provider" to select that option before clicking on the Next button.
- In the dialog box for Account Information, type Mesa State in the box next to "Name of Dialer icon." Then click on the Next button.
- Click the Next button in the ensuing two screens that advise you of the information you will need to provide to set up Internet access.
- In the screen that asks you to enter information about yourself, type in your full name in the first box, press the Tab key, and type Mesa State College in the second box. Click on the box next to "I will need a login window" to put an X in it, then click the Next button to continue.
- In the screen that asks you to enter information about your computer account, type in your mesa5 login name in the first box (for example, dscott) and your password in the second box. Click the Next button to continue.
- In the screen that asks you to enter information about your email account, type in the same information that you did for the previous screen (your login name and your password). Click Next to continue.
- Type 970 241-2209 (or 970 255-0740 for the older server) in the two boxes provided for you to specify the phone number for your modem to dial. Click the Next button to continue.
- In the box next to "Primary DNS Server address" type in 192.70.203.2 and click the Next button.
- In the final account information screen, type in mesa5.mesa.colorado.edu as the "POP server." Enter mesa5.mesa.colorado.edu as the "SMTP server," and enter news.mesastate.edu as the "NNTP server." Click Next to continue.
- Click the Next button on the screen telling you that you will need to supply information about your modem.
- Read and follow the instructions on the screen titled "Dialing Information." Click the Next button to see if the program can detect your modem and identify it. If the program is not successful in determining the type and speed of your modem and the COM port it is connected to, you will need to provide that information.
- When the setup of your modem is complete, click the Finish button to continue. A final dialog box will ask you to verify the modem information. Click Next to go on if the information is correct.
- When you are asked for the number you are calling from, enter your phone number, including the area code. Click Next.
- Read the next screen concerning special settings needed for telephones with call waiting service and those that require you to dial 9 first to get an outside line. If you have call waiting service on your telephone, click on "disable call waiting," then click on the down arrow next to the box and select *70, from the options. If you live in the dorm and have to dial 9 to get an outside line, type a 9 in the appropriate box. Click Next to continue.
- In the final setup screen, select the "Connect later" option. Click Next, then click Finish in the screen that follows.
Connect to Mesa State and open Netscape Navigator
- Double-click on the Mesa State Dialer icon in the Netscape Personal Edition program group box.
- When the "Dialer" box appears, verify that your login name is entered in the "User Name" box and that 241-2209 is entered as the "Number to Dial." Click on the Dial button.
- Wait for your modem to dial in and connect to Mesa State.
- Type in your login name and password when prompted to do so.
- When the message "Enter Selection (1-2,q)" appears, type in 0 (zero) followed by <enter>
- When the "Ascend%" prompt appears, type in ppp followed by <enter>
- After a message appears notifying you that you have entered PPP mode, click on the Continue [F7] button or press the <F7>key.
- Pop-up windows will appear notifying you that the server is validating your login name and password, then notifying you that you are being logged into the server. Finally, a box will appear notifying you that you are connected to Mesa State.
- Double-click on the Netscape Navigator icon in the Netscape Personal Edition program group box to open your browser software
Configure Netscape Navigator
- Once Netscape Navigator is loaded, select "Options" from the menu bar at the top, then select the "General Preferences" item.
- Select the "Appearance" tab and enter the following information:
- Set the Startup to launch either Netscape Browser or Netscape Mail, as you prefer
- In the box for Home Page Location, type in http://www.mesastate.edu in place of http://home.netscape.com
- Select the "Apps" tab
- In the box next to Telnet Application, type in c:\windows\terminal.exe
- Click OK
- Select "Options" from the menu bar at the top again, then select the "Mail and News Preferences" item
- Select the "Identity" tab and enter the following information:
- Type in your full name next to Your Name
- For Your Email, type in your e-mail address (for example, [email protected])
- For Reply-to Address, type in your e-mail address again (same as above)
- For Your Organization, type in Mesa State College
- Select the "Organization" tab
- Click on the box for "Remember Mail Password" to put a check mark in it
- Click OK
