Picture of South Canyon Rapid

This is a class II run at low water and and class III run at medium to high water.  There are some large standing waves at the South Canyon Bridge that will swamp most open touring canoes at any water level.

Put in: Put in at Two Rivers Park in Glenwood Springs.   Two Rivers Park is located just below the confluence of the Colorado River and the Roaring Fork River on river right.  Exit Interstate 70 at Glenwood Springs.   Turn west at the first traffic light (you are the north side of the river).   Proceed west about one-half mile then turn left to the park.

South Canyon Boat Ramp:  There is a boat ramp just west (downstream) of the South canyon rapid.  Use the South Canyon exit from I-70.

Distance: 9 miles

Take out:  Can be accessed only from the east bound lanes of I-70. Commercial rafting companies use this spot for their take-out even though there are no toilets.  Use exit 105 then you'll need to drive east 2 miles to the take out.

River Rating:  Class II and III
