Subject: new trail opening

Hi! This is Randy Engle from Vega State Park with the best kept secret
on the Mesa. At Vega we have recently marked and packed the nature
trail for winter use by snowshoers and classic skiers (trail too narrow
for skating). We are packing the trail with snowshoes as it's too tight
to get a snowmobile through some spots. Anyway the trail is 2 miles
each way. It can be done as a loop by using the snowmobile trail or by
looping along the shoreline of the lake on the return leg. the west
trail head is located at the snowmobile / OHV staging area in the
southwest corner of the park. The trail is currently marked with pink
surveyors flagging and has been packed to a 4 snowshoe width (36" -
48"). For this year consider it a back country type of trail. With any
luck and some interest we will open it up enough next summer to allow
snowmobile grooming. The trail is at 8000' and runs mostly through
aspen forests with a few open patches. Current snow pack is running from
30" to 48". For the more adventuresome the snowmobile trail up Park
Creek road could be used to access endless fields and bowls of powder
along the Leon drainage for some sweet telemarking and /or ski
mountaineering. Awesome back country stuff! For R&R Vega has 5 new
cabins that are open all winter and sleep up to 6 each. Come on up and
play!

Thanks,

Randy Engle
