RACE NOTES: Fast skiers coupled with fast
conditions made for a blazing Mesa Meltdown. Snow on the course was warm and
hard but not warm enough to melt and create troublesome slush. Three superb
skiers from the Aspen area lead the way followed by Greg
Hanscom of Paonia whose finish landed him the 4-race Grand Mesa Nordic Council
Race Series title. Suzi Evans was the third woman finisher in the 20K and she
captured the women’s overall title in the season series.
James Reed
won the 5K freestyle using classic technique. Impressive! The 5K also featured
the “battle of the 80-year-olds”, equally impressive.
The sunny
day, the fun ski conditions, and the tasty chili made for a great wrap-up of
the season although there is plenty of skiing still to be enjoyed this spring.
Crust skiing should be excellent soon. A huge thanks goes to Kenton Shaw for
his race grooming and course layout as well as for his grooming throughout the
season which had the trails in consistently great shape for training. I hope to
see everyone next December for the Winterstart race and we’ll do it all over
again.
