2009-2010 GMNC Race Series Details

Series Standings as of 02/01/10

The Grand Mesa Nordic Race Series is a series of four cross country ski races with awards for each race as well as for the cumulative point winners for the whole series. The series emphasizes ski racing for fun and personal fitness for skiers of all abilities.

A collegiate sprint race has been added to the Grand Mesa Classic weekend. This is open to all citizen racers as well as collegiate teams. An individual start time trial beginning at 11 AM will be used to seed skiers in subsequent elimination heats. Sprint results do not count for season series points.

All races will be held on the Skyway Nordic Ski Trails on Colo. Highway 65 on top of Grand Mesa.

Registration for each race will be only on race day in the Skyway parking area beginning at approximately 10 AM. Entry is $10 for Grand Mesa Nordic Council members, $15 for others. Skiers who race on 3 of the 4 race dates will earn a special commemorative prize, most likely a T-shirt again, to be delivered some time after the series completion.

Series Scoring: Male, female, and age group Series winners will be based on cumulative points awarded according to finish place in the Winterstart 5K Classic, Skyway Skuffle, Grand Mesa Classic, and Mesa Meltdown 20K. The Winterstart 5K Freestyle, the Mesa State Sprints and the Meltdown 5K do not count for Series points. The tiebreaker is finish place in the Meltdown 20K.

*Winterstart Race postponed: It's always a crapshoot scheduling a ski race in early December. We've had a long streak of wins (some just barely) but today we struck out. The WinterStart Races today were postponed due to limited open trails and blizzard conditions on them. We hated to make this call especially for the people who traveled for the event but, besides the guarantee of being a pure unfun slog through drifting snow, we considered the risk of lost or seriously frostbitten racers to be too great. Add to that the fact that I would have had to ask my stalwart volunteer timers to stand out there in that blast stationary for an hour trying to record results. Anyway, sincere apologies for the inconvenience! Please try again for the rescheduled WinterStart, same times, same format, and different weather next Sunday:

We should have a healthy helping of new snow by then which should allow us to open the trails that are sheltered in the trees. That gives us the option of racing under any conditions.
