Dave Aschwanden wrapped up the season in blazing fashion skiing 20K in just over an hour to handily win the Mesa Meltdown. The sun was also blazing but the snow remained fairly cold for wonderful conditions on the rolling course. Natalie Ward came down from Aspen to lead all of the women and placed an impressive third overall. She mentioned later that the hills and the altitude of this tough course were exactly what she thrived on. Apparently so! The field of racers was a nice mix of skiers from all around the state. Great to see them all get a taste of great Grand Mesa conditions and terrain.
The 5K segment of the Meltdown was captured by Kelsey Follett, a member of the new Mesa State College Nordic Ski Team. Tom Lambert followed in second and was the first male. Paolo Tagaki, age 12, was impressive in third place leading a group of young skiers from the Front Range. These young racers made a good impression on the two 10-year old Grand Mesa Gliders, Casey Crawford and Sigmund Lesniewski, who culminated the Glider season by racing a 2K course.
