We brought back the good ol' days of classic style skiing in a snowstorm on Grand Mesa. Ah yes! Actually, the weather was more windy than snowy and not hideously cold. Once racers got through the first kilometer up Lions Loop skiing was pretty pleasant the rest of the way in the trees around the Winslow-Sunset loop a couple of times. Thanks to our groomer Kenton Shaw for re-setting the track up Lions just prior to race start. The tracks and course must have suited Scott Oberbreckling who came down from Dillon to blaze through the race putting a good gap on everybody. Dave Aschwanden and Tre Anastasia followed for second and third with excellent times. In fourth overall and the first female to cross the line was Christie Aschwanden who apparently dueled with Al Fournier throughout the race but nipped him at the finish. The next two finishers also had a battle to the wire where Eric Trommer snuck in ahead of Suzi Evans, the second place female. Helen Carlsen was the third woman to cross. These Grand Mesa women are tough; six of the top sixteen racers were female. Great work!
It was good to have members of the newly forming Mesa State College Ski Team show up and ski well, as well as members of the Mesa State Cycling Team. I hope we can help this young talent continue to develop. We doubly thank for enduring on this not-so-comfortable day our stalwart volunteers who make it all happen: Shirley Ela, Terry Brown and Joan Dennan.
