We had a fine day and a fine turnout for the finale of the GMNC 2006-2007 Race Series. The weather couldn't make up its mind what to do so it did a little bit of everything. A light snow in the morning put a skiff of powder on top of the nice hard trail which didn't affect the skaters much but caused the classic skiers fits, none of whom reported finding a wax that worked very well more than part of the time. A squall moved in during the early portion of the race to make things challenging with snow and blow and miserable visibility. But then the sun came out and the weather calmed and all was pleasant until the next squall moved in after the race was wrapped up.
The 20K leaders Shawn Scholl and Dave Aschwanden skied in tandem the whole way right up to the final duel to the finish line which Scholl won by about 2 inches. There was a strong women's field but Christie Aschwanden was once again unbeatable placing 4th overall behind Robert Woerne. The Aschwandens' top finishes cemented their positions as the top male and female of the Four-Race Series earning them some nice prizes from Spruce Lodge and Ela Family Farms. The 5K race was won by Tom Lambert and Carol McKenzie. The big heroes as always were the many not-so-fast racers who skied personally challenging distances and finished tired but smiling.
