Race Notes:
There was about a foot of new snow to deal with on race morning and
changeable weather throughout the day. The cloud cover broke for registration
and the classic race. Then the temperature dropped for the freestyle race and a
strong snow squall moved in for the finish and awards. Some time around the
freestyle start the stove malfunctioned with flames galore and had to be
retired so skiers coming in from the second race only got tepid soup and cold
hot chocolate. Of course, that was when the weather was the worst. Nordic
skiers are a hardy lot, though, and most stuck around to collect ribbons and
prizes from Ela Family Farms and the Delta SOS Staffing Services. Thanks to our
sponsors!
Dave
Aschwanden is looking in great shape as he smoked the field by a considerable
margin in both races. The top women, Suzi Evans, Helen Carlsen, and Marilyn
Kastens, shuffled places between the two races making for great competition.
The course was put into good shape by Kenton Shaw and John Canty in tough
conditions. Thanks to their stalwart efforts, we all had fun out there and might
even do it again some time. Thanks also to race volunteers Tom Fanticone,
Graham and Sarah Stephenson, Joyce Tanihara, and Shirley Ela.
