What a difference a new day brings! Rescheduled from a doomed weekend that included blizzardy weather, deep snow, road closure, sick volunteers and a broken down car, the Grand Mesa Classic was held on a gorgeous sunny day. The course was solid with excellent tracks set by Kenton Shaw. The relatively new Ginzu Groomer proved invaluable for setting track in the already hard packed surface. The old track setter couldn't have put a dent in it. Thanks to Board Member Bob Remmerde and the Delta County Commissioners for coming up with the funds for this great piece of equipment. Also, I'm happy to report that the volunteers regained their health and were on site and the repaired car was able to deliver soup and prizes to the starting line.

Once again, Dave Aschwanden scampered off and put a huge gap on the rest of the field to win handily. Kenton Shaw cruised in for second place. I think not having to groom intensively for hours on end prior to the race helped his results considerably. Helen Carlsen topped the women and most of the guys coming in an impressive fourth overall. Also impressive were Ryan Nadiak skiing his first race at age 9 and Bill Ela finishing another of many at age 82.
