RACE NOTES: Joe, our in-house weather person, predicted a snowy and blowy cold day for the Meltdown, our final race of the season. Fortunately, he was just a bit off. I did see a few snowflakes falling, there was a breeze at times, and it was certainly colder than it has been, but it really was a decent day for having fun on skis. So we had 20 K’s worth of fun on hard fast snow.
Dave Aschwanden and Kari Distefano cruised for the male and female wins in the 20K. Tom Lambert used fine classic technique to take the 5K. Skiing under an alias because she can’t handle the spotlight of the winner’s circle, Anky von Schnoplau was the 5K female winner.
Danny DiMaria and Suzi Evans were the third place male and female in the 20K which was a sufficiently strong finish for each to become the Overall Male and Female Point Series Champions based on results of four races through the season. The Series has two Classic races and two Freestyle. Congratulations on your fast and steady skiing!
A number of asterisks are needed to explain the 20K results. Kenton Shaw, Brad Burritt, and Joe Ramey all took a several minute break shortly after the start to play cop and shoo off some invading snowmobilers. Brad went on to take a wrong turn with Rick Clark following. Rick eventually got back on track and skied a course equivalent to the official one but Brad ended up skiing an impromptu course which must have had a few extra K’s, judging by his time. Calvin Lee also racked up some extra K’s skiing a scenic route.
By the way, if any of you are activist minded and were unhappy witnessing the errant snowmobilers and seeing the myriad trails left by previous errant snowmobilers, you’re welcome to drop a note mentioning that to the USDA Forest Service, Grand Valley Ranger District, 2777 Crossroads Blvd Unit A, Grand Junction, CO 81506. You’re also welcome to drop them a note mentioning the need for either lots of gravel or some paving in the swamp, oops, I mean parking lot.
Some women’s ski gloves were left on the race table. Give Tom a call to claim them, 970-434-9753.
Have a great summer and hope to see everyone for the WinterStart next December!
