RACE NOTES

A beautiful, calm, sunny day, a smooth track, and fast conditions? Hey, let’s ski 50K! That’s just what a handful of hardcores did in the unofficial Big Bottom 50K. Since unofficial, the ambience was casual but people still skied hard.

The course, two loops of the Skyway/County Line perimeter with two short inner loops thrown in, was unmarked. A variety of courses actually got skied with several skiers earning extra credit for extra K’s but at least a couple people skied it as it was laid out. As I said, it was casual.

Greg Hanscom managed to sneak in just under three hours followed by Kevin Hines and Greg’s father Dave who was impressive skiing fast and easy out there. We now know why Greg skis so fast; he’s got great genes!

Kenton classic skied the first half then switched to his skate skis and I classiced the whole thing. I actually did a biathlon, 50K on skis and 2K on snowmobile. Launching on my second big loop, I came upon a woman who had just fallen and broken her wrist at the bottom of the long hill on Sunset. I took a break to ski back, pick up the snowmobile, and deliver the woman back to the parking lot. It ended up working to my advantage since during that break the sun, and hence the temperature, dropped a few degrees so my kick wax worked better when I began skiing again.

Thanks to Zone for providing energy bars. I discovered they are pretty hard when left out in the cold but they still made for good fuel.
