RACE NOTES: Glenn Randall, the local high school Junior Olympic racer, is a familiar sight training on Grand Mesa but we haven’t seen him race in a couple of years. I was curious to see how he would stack up with some of the older talent that typically shows up for our races. Well, we found out and HE IS AWESOME! Within a kilometer of the start he had disappeared from the pack and went on to win the race by nearly a 7 minute margin beating some very talented skiers such as Al Fournier and Greg Hanscom. Keep up the good work, Glenn!
Suzi Evans was again the top woman followed by Helen Carlsen and Kari Distefano. Brad Burritt gave the field a 6 minute head start and still finished in the middle of the pack. His two sons, Ian and Asa, were the youngest skiers at 16 and 12 while Bill Ela (80) got some old timer competition from Telluride’s Phil Miller (79). It was great to see everyone out there having fun.
The hardest part about this race was getting to the parking lot. Racers braved some truly nasty road conditions to get to Skyway. Once there, though, conditions were relatively pleasant. There was periodic light snow falling with little breeze and temperatures in the 20’s. The course was two loops around Winslow and Sunset with a short loop through the gravel pit added on. Kenton Shaw, as always, had the course nicely groomed with a fresh double set of classic tracks.

RACE NOTES: GMNC groomer Kenton Shaw had the course in excellent shape for a beautiful day of racing. It was sunny, warm, and calm. The tracks were hard and fast but not icy. The course consisted of a clockwise circuit around Vista Loop, then across Lions to Sunset and home.
