Tentative schedule for grooming at County Line and Skyway X-C Ski Areas will be on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays with volunteer grooming on Sundays. Schedule may change due to weather conditions, events and holidays.
Help us keep the trails in good condition! PLEASE follow the standard X-C etiquette rules and signs posted at the trailheads. And kindly educate others of the intended proper use of our cross country ski trails. Report to the GMNC any unusual activity, such as snowmobiles on the ski trails or obstacles like fallen trees. If you have a large group coming up to Ski or Snowshoe, please let us know ahead of time, so we can assist and groom accordingly.

Grooming Photo Gallery Updated 3-6-04
04-01-06: Skyway and County Line: 8"-10" of new snow overnight, plus another 3"-4" during the day on 7 1/2 ' base. Groomed 20k for skate and classic. Will groom tomorrow and hope to have some snowcat grooming too. Kenton
03-31-06: Skyway and County Line: Over 2' of new snow this week on 7' base. High temp. 33*F. Skiing is good on soft packed powder. Groomed about 20k today and will groom again tomorrow. Kenton
03-31-06: Ward Trail System: 75" of snow at Ward Lake Campground. Jon Canty snowmobile tracked Ward Trail and set track 7k. He also went down old staircase at my request and due to a misunderstand he accidentally went down the new staircase. Neither of these trails will be groomed on a regular basis. A crust was forming and skiing is excellent. Fred
03-23-06: Ward Trail System: The Campground was 60" and the Ward Creek Reservoir was 30" Wednesday, March 22, 2006. Tracked out Skinned Horse, skiing was very good. Ruth used easy glide Swix which was put on the night before on waxless skies. The snow was sticky in spots at 11 A.M. but broke loose when going downhill. Fred
03-20-06: Ward Trail System: John Canty groomed the 7k main Ward Trail Sunday afternoon & set track behind the comb. As you know, John also grooms at the Skyway/CountyLine ski areas & does an excellent job grooming Ward before he returns home to Delta. After Haggerty's article in the Sentinel, 3/12/06, describing our ski area as more challenging we are seeing an increase in skiers. As the weather heats up some skiers find the snow conditions better when skiing in the late afternoon when the crust gets soft. Fred
03-18-06: Skyway and County Line: 1" of new snow on 6 1/4' base. John and I had most of the skate lanes graded and had just started to set new classic track around 10:00 am. Then the snow and wind kicked into high gear and shut us down. Will groom again Sunday. Kenton
03-16-06: Skyway and County Line: 2" of new snow on 6 1/2' base. Hi temp. 34*F. Set fresh classic track on most trails and graded skate lanes on many of the trails today. Still winter like snow. Some wind drifting but mostly excellent skiing for both classic and skate. Some skiers were using blue kick wax and others were using purple today. Kenton
03-15-06: Ward Trail System: There was 64" of snow at the CG & 32" at Ward Creek Reservoir. John Canty's Monday's grooming widened the Trail. Skiing today was excellent. Fred
03-14-06: Skyway and County Line: No new snow today, but we did have 7" - 10" of new snow Sunday night that brings the 5 day storm total to between 4' and 5' of new snow. Hi temp. near 30*F. All trails are packed out and classic track is set on most trails. Big thanks to Ken Simpson for helping out today. Kenton
03-13-06: Ward Trail System: Sunday there was 6" of new snow, making it 66" at the Campground and 40" at Reservoir. John Canty went up this afternoon; rolled and set track on 7k of Ward Trail. John said the snow was much denser and had set up giving more support. Fred
03-12-06: Skyway and County Line: Another 14-18" of new snow overnight on 7' base. Groomed 9k at Skyway and 4k at County Line. Kenton
03-11-06: Skyway and County Line: Thursday saw 12"-14" of new snow, packed most trails at both areas. Friday, turned around at Mesa due to nasty weather, would have got kicked off anyway due to road closure. Saturday, road opened at 2:00 pm, 14-18" of new snow on a 6' base. Dug out the equipment and packed out Sunset and Winslow Loop (4k) before the snow started falling sideways and piling up at 2" per hour. Should have more help tomorrow and will hit it right out of the gate. Kenton
03-11-06: Ward Trail System: 60" of snow at the
Campground. About 24" of new snow. John Canty made 3 trips with the snowmobile
on the Ward Trail with a lot of difficulty. He was unable to take the roller
down due to the afternoon snow and white out. Jerry
03-10-06: Skyway and County Line: The
soon to be famous March06 blizzard will continue through Sunday with our trails
getting feet of new snow. Today, Friday, highway65 is closed across the top.
Conditions for Sunday, assuming we can get up there, snow will be falling in SW
wind gusts in the open areas. Race time air temp around 15F with snow temp a bit
colder, lets guess at 10-12F. RH will be high. Richard Hypio and I recommend
Fast Wax Green (hi-fluro). Joe Ramey
03-02-06: Skyway and County Line: Only 2" of new snow this week on a base of nearly 5'. Groomed most trails for skate and classic (about 25k), with the exception of Dog Loop and Dog Trail. Kenton
02-23-06: Skyway and County Line: No grooming today as the trails are still in good shape from Monday's grooming. Skiing is fast and fun on medium hard packed powder with 1" of light fluff on top. Hi temp. 27*F. Will touch up skate lanes tomorrow. Kenton
02-20-06: Skyway and County Line: 3-4" of new snow Saturday night. Groomed most trails for skate and classic on Sunday, but windy conditions persisted and the best skiing was in the trees. Today there was another 3-4" overnight with flurries during the day, but little wind. Groomed 30k for skate and classic with 20k of it by snowcat. Next grooming will probably be Thursday or Friday. Kenton
02-20-06: Ward Trail System: Jon Canty groomed and
set track on 7k of Ward Trail. There was 3+ inches some new and some wind
drifting. Hopefully we will be through with the wind for a
few days. Fred
02-18-06: Skyway and County Line: Conditions much the same as Friday, with strong southwest winds. Groomed many trails, but again it was tough to tell as the classic track was quickly filled in out in the open areas. Scales Lake Rd is highly drifted for the first kilometer on the Skyway side, but the County Line side of Scales Lake that is in the trees offers excellent skiing. Kenton
02-17-06: Skyway and County Line: Ah, much warmer today. Lo temp. 7*F. High temp. 20*F. Well it felt a lot warmer. The problem was the winds were much stronger today and the best skiing was on trails in the trees such as Sunset, Winslow, Loop 2 and Loop 3. The high winds have also brought some of Utah and Arizona to the area and the snow has a little reddish brown tint in places. Groomed mainly on Dog loop and Loop 2 for a school group today. Will groom more tomorrow. Kenton
02-16-06: Skyway and County Line: It was a vuvuvuvuvuvery cold day today, all day long. Lo temp. of -8*F. High temp. 14*F. Hope tomorrow is warmer. 2" of new snow at County Line and 5" of new snow at Skyway on a base just shy of 5'. Groomed about 20k out of 33k for skate and classic skiing. Kenton
02-12-06: Ward Trail System: Jon Canty groomed and set track on 7k of the Ward trail. Fred
02-11-06: Skyway and County Line: No new snow. Lo temp. around -6*F. High temp. 10 - 15*F. Freshly groomed 17k out of 33k with rental snowcat for skate and classic skiing. Kenton
02-09-06: Skyway and County Line: No new snow. Lo temp. 14*F. High temp. 34*F. Groomed a little bit, mainly on the east side of Loop 3 and set new track in some of the open areas. The trails and snow are generally still in great shape. I would rate it as good to excellent skiing for both skate and classic skiing on medium to hard packed powder. Kenton
02-08-06: Ward Trail System: Snow depth is 48" at Ward CG & 28" at Ward Creek Reservoir. The skiing was very good today. The 3 snow bridges are holding up on the live water crossings on the new Deep Slough Trail. They were tested by my 80 lb dog Homer. I thank the snow shoers who stayed out of the ski track on the new staircase trail & thus widened the trail. Fred
02-07-06: Skyway and County Line: No new snow on 5' base. Lo temp. 9*F. High temp. 28*F. Another near perfect day with light winds and dark blue skies. The snow is just right, not to hard and not to soft. Groomed some of the skating lanes and left the classic track as is. Good to excellent skiing for skate and classic skiing on 33k of trails. Kenton
02-05-06: Skyway and County Line: 1" of new snow on five foot base. Temp. was between 10 and 12 degree most of the day. Groomed most trails for skate and classic although it was tough to tell because of the high winds today. Kenton
02-03-06: Skyway and County Line: 6-8" of new snow on 5' base. All trails are groomed for skate and classic skiing. Some with snowcat and some with snowmobile. Kenton
02-03-06: Ward Trail System: 10" of new snow at Ward Campground with a 58" base. 6" of new snow at Ward Creek Reservoir. Mary Bohl and crew roller groomed 7k of the Ward Trail. Fred
01-31-06: Ward Trail System: One inch of new snow since the Sunday grooming total 48" at Upper Ward CG. Overcast sky with fog. Tracked out Sheep Trail. No new snow, skiing was very good. Fred
01-31-06: Skyway and County Line: No grooming today, sorry. Went up and skied instead. Only a trace of new snow since Sunday on 5' base. Trails are in fair to good shape on soft to medium packed powder. The best skiing today was in the trees mainly due to the thick fog. Next grooming will probably be on Friday with some of it to be with rental snowcat. Kenton
01-29-06: Skyway and County Line: 2"-4" of new snow overnight. John groomed 7k at Ward about 8' wide in the morning. After the road was opened at 12:30 John and I groomed most trails at Skyway and County Line 16' wide for skate and classic skiing. Kenton
01-29-06: Ward Trail System: John Canty Roller
groomed 7k. All trails skied at Ward: Staircase, new Deep Slough, East Ward,
Finney, Skinned Horse, all in good shape. Snow depth 32" at
Ward Creek Res. Fred
01-28-06: Skyway and County Line: GMNC
Racing Folks, Late Saturday afternoon we got a call from the CDOT guys that
Highway 65 from Grand Mesa Lakes Lodge on the north all the over the top to the
Grand Mesa Lodge on the south will be closed
at least until midday. If the road opens earlier than planned, then
the race may still be held, although probably delayed. Check this website
for the latest info on Highway 65 road closures
http://www.cotrip.org/ and look under
"Alerts & Closures"
And I was planning to beat Kenton this time!
Joe Ramey
01-28-06: Skyway and County Line: About 12"
of new snow overnight plus 4-6" on Thursday night. Snow depth is at 5 1/2'. John
and I packed out all trails today and set some classic track. Conditions are
soft packed powder. Should have rental snowcat grooming tomorrow.
CDOT is closing Hwy 65 from Mesa
Lakes to Grand Mesa Lodge tonight and will blast for avalanches tomorrow
morning. Hopefully the road will be reopened by noon tomorrow, which is
generally about how long it takes them. Kenton
01-28-06: Skyway and County Line: We
have a new tradition. Schedule a GMNC racing event and get a big dump of new
snow! Well why not do it again on Sunday?!
I am at work this Friday night and snow is falling on the GMNC trails. The
National Weather Service is thinking 5-8 inches of new by Saturday morning.
After a break Saturday, the next northern Pacific storm sweeps through the
Rockies Saturday night into Sunday morning. The latest models indicate we will
have another 3-5 inches of new snowfall be Sunday morning with snow ending
around race time. But NW gusty winds overnight will have caused some drifting
problems for the
morning groomers.
At 11AM: Snow temperature 10-15F, air temperature 15-20F, RH still above 50% but
dropping. Still some gusty W-NW winds in the open areas. As always check
the latest forecast: http://home.mesastate.edu/~jerry/gmnc/weather/weather.htm
Should be lovely conditions for some high throttle skiing. See you there.
Joe Ramey
01-27-06: Ward Trail System: 4-6" of new snow. Groomed 7k of Ward Trail with roller. Some wind and drifting during the day. Fred
01-24-06: Skyway and County Line: No new snow on 4 3/4' base. 10:00 am temp. 27*F. 1:00 pm temp. 40*F. No grooming today as all trails are still in good shape. Kenton
01-22-06: Skyway and County Line: No
new snow on 5' base. Touched up a few trails, close to the two trailheads. 33k
groomed for skate and classic.
Skiing was great although still a little brisk. The 7:00 am temp. was -17*F, but
quickly warmed up to -2*F by 9:00 am. Temp at noon was 13*F and by 4:00 pm it
was up to 18*F. Kenton
01-21-06: Skyway and County Line: No new snow on 5' base. Lo temp. -2*F. High temp. 24*F. Touched up many of the trails today and will do the same tomorrow. Classic skiing was excellent and skating was pretty good too as the snow is warming up. Kenton
01-20-06: Skyway and County Line: 1" of new snow overnight on 5' base. Lo temp. 0*F. High temp. 16*F. Groomed a little, but most trails were still in good shape from Thursday's grooming. Will touch up trails tomorrow. Kenton
01-20-06: Ward Trail System: 46" at Ward Campground with 4" new snow. Good grooming with roller 7k of Ward Trail to Ward Reservior. Other trails tracked out by skiers and/or snowshoers. The hills are getting covered well enough for telemarking. Fred
01-19-06: Skyway and County Line: 5" of new snow on 5' base. Midday temp in the low 20's. John groomed half the trails this morning with snowmobile and Ken Simpson groomed the other half this afternoon with Snowcat. All trails groomed for skate and classic skiing (33k). Kenton
01-17-06: Skyway and County Line: No new snow on 5' base. Groomed trails at County Line today for skate and classic and set new classic track on Skyway trails. 32k total. May have snowcat grooming this Friday. Kenton
01-17-06: Ward Trail System: Mary Bohl and crew groomed 7k of the Ward Trail. Approximately 6" of new snow. Fred
01-16-06: Skyway and County Line: John reported about 2' of new snow. Groomed most of Skyway trails 13k with classic track set on 8k. Grooming will continue tomorrow. Kenton
01-13-06: Skyway and County Line: 6-8" of new snow on 4' base. Lo temp. -5*F. High temp. 30*F. All trails are groomed for skate and classic skiing (32k). Kenton
01-13-06: Ward Trail System: New snow, John Canty groomed with the roller and set track on 7k of the Ward Trail. Fred
01-10-06: Skyway and County Line: 2-3" of new snow on a base of nearly 4'. Lo temp. 1*F. High temp. 34*F. Great day with almost no wind. Groomed most of the trails ( about 30k) at both areas for skate and classic skiing. Next grooming will be on Friday with some of to be done with Snowcat. Kenton
01-08-06: Skyway and County Line: No new snow overnight, but some flurries during the day. Lo temp. 14*F. High temp. 22*F. Set new classic track mainly in the wind blown open areas. Remainder of the trails are still in good shape for skate and classic skiing.
01-07-06: Skyway and County Line: No new snow on 3 3/4' base. Lo temp. 25*F. High temp. 31*F. Groomed skate lanes on trails that were not snowcat groomed several days ago. Due to windy conditions, didn't set any new track. Skiing was still pretty good for both skate and classic on most trails. Will groom as needed tomorrow. Kenton
01-02-06: Skyway and County Line: 2-3"
of new snow since Monday on 4' base. Lo temp. 17*F. Hi temp. 28*F. All trails
freshly groomed (32k). With the exception of Will's Hill. Skate and Track skiing
was excellent. Kenton
01-04-06: Ward Trail System: In Campground there was 40" of snow. Sam Vasicko and Ray Tolbert groomed this morning. Highway 65 was closed today over the Mesa but Ward was great for Back Country skiing. Fred
01-02-06: Skyway and County Line: Trace of new snow with some freezing drizzle in the early morning that made the roads very slick. Snow depth is at 4'. Lo temp. 15*F. High temp. 30*F. Set new track on all trails and left the skate lane as it was still fairly good, but became a little punching during mid-day. Classic skiing was very good except for the " breezy" conditions in the open areas. The good news about the drizzle is that the wind drifts were at a minimum and according to some of the snowmobiler's I've talked to is the snow conditions are very tough for off trail sledding. Kenton
01-02-06:: Ward Trail System: Snowmobile packed by John Canty. Conditions were difficult with 6" of new drifted snow. On Saturday, 12/31/05, completed snow bridges on the East Ward trail with help from Mary Pfalzgraff and Ruth. New log bridge below Deep Ward packed with snow. Fred
01-01-06: Skyway and County Line: 11" of new snow overnight. Lo temp. 19*F. High in low 20's. Most all trails are groomed, but not all have classic track set. Will groom again tomorrow. Kenton

12-30-05: Weather Report: A big blob of Pacific moisture
is streaming in for the weekend. Light snow will fall Friday night and Saturday.
But a cold front will slam the Grand Mesa right around the time we are kissing
each other Saturday night. By sunday 11AM race time, the National Weather
Service is thinking something like 8-12 inches of new snow accumulation, with up
to 16 inches by Sunday evening. We will try to have snowcat grooming for the
race, but prepare for yet another soft track Skuffle.
Race time weather: Cloudy with snow falling but diminishing after heavy snow
overnight. Temp...24-28F, RH>50% (high), West-Northwest wind 3-8 mph in the
trees with gusts to 20-30 mph in the open areas producing drifts. As always go
the GMNC.info page and check the weather links for the latest on this developing
storm. See you up there, but after the race I'm gonna go do some pow tele
turns! Joe
12-30-05: Skyway and County Line: No new snow on 3
1/2' base. 7:00 AM temp. 9*F. 11:00 AM temp. 21*F. Light snow began falling at
4:00 PM.

12-28-05: Ward Trail System: 2-3 inches of new snow. It was great skiing in the morning, a little sticky at noon. Will probably groom on Friday after the next snow. Fred
12-25-05: Ward Trail System: Skied below the last CG (27
") to the start of E Ward trail. Put in a 4 log bridge since the flow coming out
of Ward Lake was too great too hold a snow bridge. This was done with a bow saw.
Continued on to the permanent leak coming out of Sheep reservoir. Was able to
cross on a deposit of twigs & branches from the last storm. Any skier or
snowshoer who has a shovel is invited to ski this & shovel in some snow to cover
the branches.
Went down Ward to old Staircase. Canty found some chunks of Balsm Fir log to
weight the track setter & made very good tracks in the late after noon on
Saturday. These have set up on Ward Trail & should last to the next snow. Talked
to two skiers who did lower Ward trail & hit no rocks. Fred
12-24-05: Skyway and County Line: If you haven't
been up skiing lately, let me tell you it is wonderful. We have received a very
nice Christmas present: Friday afternoon, Ken Simpson from the Grand Mesa Lodge
snowcat groomed much of the Skyway-County Line trail system while Winslow
Robertson set classic track behind him. So these trails should be in perfect
shape for your holiday skiing pleasure. Some trails are too narrow to snowcat
groom such as Loop 3, Sunset-Winslow, and the tree-side of Vista.
But this is a gift that keeps on giving, as we plan to snowcat groom regularly
for the remainder of the season. We will continue to try to snowcat groom just
before the weekend or after big storms, depending on Ken Simpson's schedule.
How can we afford to pay for this extra special grooming, you ask? Well the Jean
Thomas Lambert Foundation of Ohio has given us a generous grooming grant! In
fact we are now in the market for a snowcat of our own. So not only do we have
the best snow in Colorado, we are also about to have excellent grooming too.
There will be more on the Lambert snowcat grant in upcoming newsletters. If you
are not getting a newsletter, a family membership of only $40 will get it
delivered right to your mailbox.
For now get up and enjoy the trails and mild weather. Smile and say Hi to each
other as you pass. Stop by Grand Mesa Lodge and buy a drink or snack from Ken.
Happy Holidays to you and yours
Your President, Joe Ramey

We skied the Ward Trail down the old Staircase Trail to the Ward Creek bridge to facilitate grooming Monday. The snow has not consolidated due to cold temperatures. We wish to thank the snowshoers & skiers who tracked the lower loop of the Ward Creek Trail today. This makes it easier for others. Fred

There are still 16 downed trees on Ward Trail after leaving the campground. Went over the new bridge & traversed part of the Deepslough trail. It is still early to be skiing where I went but if you have rock skies or snowshoes & yearn to go on an ungroomed trail with no tracks its there. Only 4" of snow at Ward Creek Reservoir. Fred
11-27-05: 6" of new snow overnight and 3-4" during the day. Total depth a little over 2 feet. Low temp. 5*F at 6:30 AM and high temp. 5*F at 1:30 PM with strong north wind. Groomed several trails at Skyway. It was too cold and windy to do much more. A good day to ski in the trees. Kenton
