Drafting
Purpose:
To help you think about different possibilities for telling your story, to explore options in voice, tone, point of view.
To get lots of writing on paper so that you give yourself some options both in style and content.
To begin to pull pieces together and create a coherent essay.
In your free writing, brainstorming and clustering "phase" you probably discovered that you had lots to write about and that you could come up with loads of details about various events in your life. The next step is to look at that free writing, at the details you've generated and to find a way to focus and organize your story telling. Every story can be told from many different perspectives and each perspective requires a reevaluation of the details that will be included, of the tone of the story, of the "message" the reader will take away. In the drafting stage, you need to consider your options and focus your writing. The following exercises should help you to do this. |
